KUALA LUMPUR (June 2): A committee within the National Security Council (NSC) has been tasked with monitoring the compliance of the health ministry’s standard operating procedures (SOPs) among foreign workers.

Health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the matter was decided at a meeting of the NSC today, held to address the spike of Covid-19 cases among foreign workers in Malaysia.

"Yesterday we showed that based on our modelling, we know that Malaysians have adhered to the SOPs, but the ministry's concern right now is for the foreign workers.

"So today we discussed this during the NSC meeting, and an existing committee will look into the compliance of foreign workers on the SOPs released by the health ministry. The implementation is important," he said in the ministry's daily Covid-19 press briefing.

Yesterday, Dr Noor Hisham noted that the number of locally-transmitted Covid-19 cases among Malaysians is in line with the projection in the modeling done by the ministry’s National Institute of Health (NIH).

He said the local transmission rate reflects the positive impact of the actions taken by the government and Malaysians' compliance with the SOPs and the recommendations made by the government.

"If Malaysians, as well as foreign workers, are able to comply with the SOPs, then we can definitely break the chain of Covid-19 infections in our country," he said today.

Furthermore, Dr Noor Hisham said if the number of daily new Covid-19 cases are contained at single digits, then more sectors will be reopened in stages.

He noted that the ministry does not expect a surge of cases after the Aidilfitri period, assuming all Malaysians adhere to the recommended SOPs.

"And if all sectors are opened and our monitoring is going well, and we still have single digits or lower double digits [of daily new cases], then we are ready to go into the exit strategy.
