KUALA LUMPUR (Oct 16): Chief Statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin has been appointed as the chairman of the committee on statistics of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP).

The appointment will be from 2018 to 2020, the Statistics Department said in a statement today.

This is a prestigious recognition for the department, due to its active participation and contribution at the international level, the statement added.

ESCAP works to improve the use of statistics for evidence-based decision making and to develop and disseminate quality statistics for inclusive, sustainable and resilient societies in the Asia-Pacific region.

The committee on statistics is a high-level platform for the national statistical systems of the member countries to share knowledge and exchange experiences, as well as best practices.

Only two other Malaysians had been appointed as the committee’s chairman, namely R. Chander (1970-1972) and Khoo Teik Huat (1992-1994).
