KUALA LUMPUR (June 6): Former governor of Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) Tan Sri Dr Zeti Akhtar Aziz has called the central bank "a solid institution to serve the people".

Zeti declined to comment on the resignation of Bank Negara Governor Tan Sri Muhammad Ibrahim when asked by reporters following the meeting of the Council of Eminent Persons at Ilham tower here today.

"All I will say is that the central bank is a solid institution that serves the people," she said before leaving the premises.

Earlier today, Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said after a cabinet meeting that he has accepted the resignation of Muhammad, but no decision has been made on a successor.

It is understood that Muhammad offered his resignation to the prime minister yesterday morning with no reason given for leaving.

Dr Mahathir said the government would announce a new governor next week.
