KUALA LUMPUR (Oct 7): Celcom Axiata Bhd (Celcom) said today it had suspended dealers who did not verify the identities of those registering for new prepaid SIM cards in 2019.

“In regard to recent action by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) against mobile providers for failing to perform identity verification for new prepaid SIM card registrations in 2019, Celcom Axiata Bhd has immediately taken action to suspend the responsible dealers and will further investigate their misconduct,” said the telecommunications company (telco).

It added that in keeping with the MCMC’s standards and regulations, Celcom practises self-regulation, and periodically self-policies over 10,000 third-party dealers nationwide, to heighten awareness and overall standards of practice.

“Celcom views the matter seriously and strives to uphold the MCMC’s stipulated regulations, policies and guidelines for prepaid SIM registrations,” it added.

Yesterday, it was reported that the MCMC had slapped six telcos with fines totalling RM700,000 for failing to verify user information. Celcom was fined RM150,000 for the infraction.
