MALAYSIAN food is known for its fusion of cuisines and tropical flavour thanks to its mixture of spices and local ingredients. Caribbean food, though not very well known in this region, is also a combination of these flavours that we are familiar with.  British celebrity chef Jonathan Phang was in Malaysia recently to introduce a series of Caribbean recipes.

Thanks to the Asian Food Channel (AFC) and Berjaya University College of Hospitality (UCH), the fun-loving and quirky chef was here to promote his latest show on AFC entitled Jonathan Phang’s Gourmet Trains and to host two special culinary events known as Caribbean Flavours with Jonathan Phang. The exclusive events allowed guests to meet the larger-than-life chef and watch him do a short cooking demonstration.

As part of his two-week South East Asian culinary tour, the British chef teamed up with students from the Berjaya UCH to put together the two special culinary evenings on July 27 and 28.  Held at the Sampling on the Fourteenth, Berjaya UCH in Berjaya Times Square, guests were given the special opportunity to try out colourful Caribbean cuisine.

Commenting on the exclusive culinary events, executive director and chief executive office of Berjaya UCH, Mae Ho said that such events are great ways to provide their students with hands-on experience while introducing them to international television chefs. The carefully prepared menu gave students at Berjaya UCH the opportunity to discover new cuisine and learn from an international chef. At the event, guests were given the opportunity to watch him prepare breaded cod served with mango salsa, red pepper mayonnaise and mixed leaves.

Jonathan Phang was previously a leading fashion industry personality in the United Kingdom. He was the judge for the popular Britain’s Next Top Model reality series for three seasons. Now focusing on his true love — food — Jonathan is now dedicated to going on adventurous gastronomic journeys and introducing exciting cuisine to audiences. Having grown up in a Chinese-Caribbean household, he had the benefit of tasting food full of spices and intense flavours. His unique heritage is the inspiration behind his cooking show Jonathan Phang’s Caribbean Cookbook which explores the region’s cooking and cuisine.

His latest show which is on the AFC channel on Astro follows his journey on some of the world’s most luxurious trains while sampling their gastronomic delights. The show gave him the opportunity to travel all over the world taking him from London to Bangkok in style.
