(Sept 18): DAP lawmaker Steven Sim is the latest to be hauled up by the police over last month’s Bersih 4 rally.

The Bukit Mertajam MP said he has been asked to present himself to the police tomorrow.

“As instructed by (the) police, I will go to Bandar Perda police station on Saturday, Sept 19, 10.30am.

“Appreciate your support. I will hold a press conference on this matter at 11.30am in front of the Bandar Perda police station. Thank you," he posted on his WhatsApp group with the media in Penang today.

Sim said he was being called up for his involvement in the Bersih rally.

Other MPs who have been hauled up over Bsrsih 4 include PKR’s Batu MP Chua Tian Chang and Pandan MP Rafizi Ramli.

Bersih 4 was held on Aug 29 and 30, calling for reforms as well as the resignation of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak over the scandals affecting his administration.

Among the scandals are the debt-ridden 1Malaysia Development Berhad and the RM2.6 billion donation deposited into his personal accounts shortly before the 2013 general election.

It was reported today that even Perlis mufti Datuk Dr Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin is being investigated under the Sedition Act over a Facebook posting just before the Bersih 4 rally.

DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said he was surprised that the police were not displaying the same enthusiasm over the “red shirt” rally on Wednesday where foul language and defamatory remarks like “babi Cina” were made.

He also expressed surprise that the sedition charge against Malay Armed Forces Veterans Association president Mohd Ali Baharom was withdrawn yesterday.

Ali, also known as Ali Tinju, was charged with making inflammatory remarks outside Kuala Lumpur’s Low Yat Plaza in July.

“The charge was withdrawn even though there was a recording of what he had said.

“I think there are double standards and selective persecution,” Lim said.

Lim, who is also Penang chief minister, said legal counsel would be provided for Sim and anyone from Penang who needed assistance if they were hauled up by the police over the Bersih rally. – The Malaysian Insider
