KUALA LUMPUR (April 18): The Energy Commission said on its official website today that it has shortlisted five of the seven candidates to participate in the tender exercise for a 2,000MW project 3B greenfield coal-fired power plant.

The power plant is estimated to cost around RM8 billion to RM9 billion, based on the cost of US$1,300-US$1,500 per kilowatt.

The plant is to be developed at a site proposed by the bidders, said the Energy Commission.

Companies which have been shortlisted are consortiums led by 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB), Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB), Formis Resources Bhd, YTL Power International Bhd and soon to-be-listed Malakoff Corporation Bhd.

1MDB has proposed Jimah in Negeri Sembilan as its site while TNB has proposed Tanjung Hantu Sungai in Perak. Malakoff has proposed Pulau Carey, Selangor, while Formis and YTL Power has proposed Tanjung Tohor, Johor.

The five players will have until 30th September 2013 to submit their bids.
