(Oct 22): There are several Barisan Nasional (BN) MPs who will not support Budget 2016, which is set to be unveiled tomorrow by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, said BN Backbenchers Club chairman Tan Sri Abdul Shahrir Samad.

But the Johor Baru MP said he was confident that the government would still have the majority support and prevail when budget is put to vote.

Despite being pressed, the veteran MP did not name who they were.

"They are the same suspects. I am sure you also know that," he said when met at Parliament lobby today.

Shahrir said a majority of BN lawmakers were still going to support the budget because they were disciplined and would not fall for games played by the opposition.

"I don't think there is a reason for them not to support the budget."

Shahrir also said many of the BN MPs were also involved in preparing the budget this time so it would be impossible that they would play politics.

"I am sure our MPs don't have the intention to play politics."

On Wednesday, Shahrir had told the opposition bloc it should be aware that filing a motion of no-confidence was futile, adding that they did not seem to understand Parliament rules.

He, instead, had advised the opposition to concentrate on ensuring the budget was not passed by Parliament.

He said if the Budget 2016, to be tabled by Najib this Friday, failed to be passed in Dewan Rakyat, the prime minister would have to relinquish his post.

Without legislative approval, the budget could not be passed and the government would be seen as crippled without any financial resources.

"If the budget is not passed, there is no government, no finances. How will the government carry out its administration without paying salaries and allocations?

"I did not propose this. It is a parliamentary convention. If the budget is not passed, it will mean that there is no support for the ruling party," he told The Malaysian Insider.

A simple majority is need to either pass or defeat a bill in Dewan Rakyat.
