KUALA LUMPUR (May 22): The Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) will play a more active role in delivering information and news to the people, simultaneously realising the aspiration of the Pakatan Harapan government to bring Malaysia to a better level.

Addressing Bernama's commitment as a national news agency, its chairman Datuk Seri Azman Ujang said the organisation would improve the quality of news reporting especially in the reporting of important news within the first 100 days of the new government administration.

"In this 'new Malaysia' mood, of course, many big news will be announced especially in the first 100 days promised by the government.

"We are ready to serve as best as possible and all staff at various levels including in the states have been told to do their best so that the aspiration of the Pakatan Harapan government to bring Malaysia to a better level will be achieved with Bernama news information," he said after attending a breaking of fast and Bernama's 51st anniversary celebration at Wisma Bernama, yesterday.

Also present were Bernama Chief Executive Officer Datuk Zulkefli Salleh and Editor-in-Chief Datuk Zakaria Abdul Wahab as well as Bernama officers.

Azman also congratulated Puchong Member of Parliament Gobind Singh Deo on his appointment as the new Minister of Communications and Multimedia.

"I congratulate the Honourable Gobind Singh, though I do not know him personally, but we plan to pay him a courtesy call.

"With the appointment of a politician of calibre like him, I think with new ideas by the new minister, will inject a new spirit (in us) to continue to perform our duty," he said.

Meanwhile, Zulkefli said that, as a government agency, Bernama would function as usual and serve the government as best as possible.

"Whoever is chosen by the people as a government, we will disseminate government information to the people as we have done since the 51 years Bernama have been in operation.

"I also welcome and congratulate YB Gobind (on his appointment), we are ready to work with him," he said.
