KLANG: PKR deputy president Mohamed Azmin Ali was sworn in yesterday as Selangor’s 15th menteri besar before the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah.

The ceremony at Istana Alam Shah took place at 10.45am, according to Bernama, with the Bukit Antarabangsa assemblyman dressed in traditional Malay attire, accompanied by his wife Shamshida Taharin.

Only official media were allowed to cover the ceremony.

Selangor State Secretary Datuk Mohammed Khusrin Munawi, State Assembly Speaker Hannah Yeoh, and Selangor exco members Iskandar Abdul Samad and Dr Ahmad Yunus Hairi were also present at the swearing-in ceremony, reports Bernama.

Mohamed Azmin recited the MB’s oath containing 10 pledges he must adhere to for as long as he leads the state. These include upholding the Rukun Negara, preserving and protecting the status of Islam as the state religion, upholding and defending the sovereignty of the royal institution, and carrying out his duties with the highest integrity, responsibility, honesty, trust and sincerity.

The MB’s oath also binds him to protecting the special position of the Malays and the interest of other races as enshrined in the Federal Constitution and the laws of the state, prioritising the people’s interests so long as they did not threaten the state, safeguarding the good ties between Selangor and the federal government, and preserving harmony among different races.

Mohamed Azmin succeeds Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim who had helmed the state since 2008.
