KUALA LUMPUR (March 12): PKR deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali admitted today that if Umno fields its deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan as its candidate for the upcoming Rantau by-election, the Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition will face a big challenge.

Speaking to reporters at the Parliament lobby, Azmin said Mohamad, who is fondly known as Tok Mat, has an advantage having been former menteri besar of Negeri Sembilan and state assemblymen of the constituency.

“We admit that our journey to Rantau may be a big challenge if Umno fields Datuk Seri Mohamad Hassan as its candidate. Of course, he has the advantage of being the former menteri besar and the representative of the people in the area.

“But I believe in the combined force of PH. With a powerful machinery and having the right strategy, we can give a strong fight in Rantau,” he said.

Azmin added that PH will not be distressed if Umno decides to play up racial issues leading up to the by-election. Instead, the economic affairs minister said the coalition will remain steadfast in serving all Malaysians.

“Umno will continue to play racial issues and that is indeed their survival mode. But PH will always stick to the principle that we want all Malaysians to enjoy the prosperity and development of the country.

“We will explain some of the initiatives we have done and we hope the people can accept the views and policies of the PH,” he said.

When asked about PKR’s Dr S. Streram’s chances of winning the Malay-majority seat as PH candidate, Azmin said: “Well we have never considered fielding a candidate for PH based on race. He is a Malaysian representing all races and if we can convince voters in Rantau, we have the opportunity to win the seat.”
