KUALA LUMPUR (Dec 19): Sales of new cars and trucks continued to decline in November 2016 from the year before with 49,085 units sold, according to the Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA).

Sales in November 2016 dropped 12.5% or 6,983 units from 56,068 units in November 2015. Vehicle sales fell 14.2% year-on-year in October 2016.

In a statement today, MAA said passenger car sales dropped 11.7% to 43,550 units in November 2016 from 49,324 units in November 2015, while commercial vehicle sales declined 17.9% to 5,535 units from 6,744 units.

"(Nevertheless,) sales volume for November 2016 was 2.5% higher than October 2016, on new model launches and attractive offers and discounts by car companies," said MAA.

Year to date, total vehicle sales also fell 13.7% to 515,293 units from 597,306 units a year ago. For the January-November 2016 period, new passenger car sales dropped 13.8% to 456,943 units from 530,173 units a year ago, while commercial vehicle sales fell 13.1% to 58,350 units from 67,133 units.

However, total vehicle production in November 2016 increased 14.3% to 57,369 units from 50,203 units a year ago. For the January-November 2016 period, total vehicle production dropped 12.6% to 497,418 units from 569,374 units a year ago.

MAA said sales volume for December 2016 is expected to be slightly better than November 2016 due to year-end festive sales promotions and possibility of consumers buying forward in anticipation of car prices increasing in 2017.
