(Sept 2): Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said he welcomed Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad's presence at last weekend's Bersih 4 rally to demand Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak's resignation.

Despite the decades of enmity between the two, Anwar congratulated the former prime minister and every other Malaysian who took part in the rally.

He said the 34-hour rally proved all Malaysians were mature in practising their right to assemble peacefully.

"Even though they were threatened and faced all sorts of obstacles from the government, the people continued with their struggle for change and fight against corruption and lies.

"I also welcome the presence of Tun Mahathir and Dr Siti Hasmah at the Bersih 4 rally," said the jailed PKR de facto chief in a message sent through his lawyer yesterday.

Anwar declared the rally a huge success, saying it had brought Bersih's demands to the public's attention.

Aside from calling for the prime minister's resignation, the rally also demanded the right to dissent and the strengthening of parliamentary democracy.

Yesterday, Dr Mahathir said he had been forced to attend Bersih 4 to find solutions to the country's woes.

He said while he remained opposed to street protests, the current leadership had destroyed available avenues for recourse. – The Malaysian Insider
