(June 2): Former opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim will undergo tests, including a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for his right shoulder, in hospital before returning to prison on Friday, said his wife Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.

Anwar, who was transferred from the Sungai Buloh prison and warded at the Kuala Lumpur Hospital (HKL) earlier today, will not need surgery at the moment and will be discharged on Friday, Dr Wan Azizah told reporters at the hospital today.

"He is stable. He will undergo a lot of tests after this especially MRI for his right shoulder and scope for suspected bleeding, even though the blood result shows that he is quite stable.

"At the moment I think surgery is not on the cards," said Dr Wan Azizah, who is now leads the opposition pact Pakatan Rakyat.

"It has eased my anxiety to see him in hospital even though he has lost weight," the PKR president added.

Dr Wan Azizah, who won in a by-election for her husband's seat, Permatang Pauh, recently, said Anwar was in strong spirits but needed more supervision and care.

Anwar is reportedly suffering from high blood pressure, has traces of blood in his stool and also a worsening shoulder injury.

He is serving a five-year sentence and has been in prison since February 10 when the Federal Court upheld his conviction of sodomising his former aide Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan.

Meanwhile, Anwar's eldest daughter Nurul Izzah Anwar said PKR's parliamentary whip Datuk Johari Abdul had also requested for an independent medical assessment but added that the family was satisfied with the assessment by HKL's consultant physician Datuk Dr S. Jeyaindran.

"But we are also mindful that he is a political prisoner and he shouldn't be there in the first place. We hope that every prisoner gets the right to treatment. This is another issue we have to tackle," Nurul Izzah, the Lembah Pantai MP, said.

Anwar, 68, has had his long political career twice interrupted by sodomy charges, first in 1998 after he was sacked from government, and now. He and the opposition maintains that the charges were a political conspiracy to end his career.

Also present today were his other children, Nurul Nuha, Nurul Hana, and Nurul Ilham. – The Malaysian Insider
