KUALA LUMPUR (July 26): PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said today the government's move to contain significant power originating from the Ministry of Finance (MoF) under the prime minister is acceptable during a transition period to achieve the government's reform agenda.

Speaking at a press conference here today, Anwar said the government's current conduct does not amount to political hypocrisy despite Pakatan Harapan promising segregation of duties in civil service before taking over the government.

"No, I don't think so (that it amounts to political hypocrisy). I think during a transition period, these are acceptable," he said.

Anwar said this after attending a presentation at the Parliament on the Malaysian economy by Dr Edmund Terence Gomez, who is a professor at University of Malaya's department of administrative studies and politics under the faculty of economics and administration.

During the presentation, Gomez questioned the rationale of the prime minister possessing direct control over Permodalan Nasional Bhd (PNB) and Khazanah Nasional Bhd.

According to Khazanah's website, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad sits on the board of the Malaysian sovereign wealth fund.

Dr Mahathir also sits on government investment arm PNB's board of trustees, PNB's website shows.
