KUALA LUMPUR (Dec 13): AirAsia X Bhd chairman Tan Sri Rafidah Aziz said South Korea is becoming an important market for the budget airline as the company expands its global aviation network.

In a statement today, Rafidah said AirAsia Bhd and AirAsia X already have flight connectivity through 130 destinations and 1,681 routes. She said this reflects AirAsia X's extensive short haul and long flight coverage within Asia and beyond.

"South Korea is fast becoming an important market to us and we are very grateful for the tremendous support from the governments and relevant authorities for making this new exclusive route possible. Apart from facilitating tourism and cross flows of business and trade, this direct flight route will also strengthen bilateral relations between Malaysia and South Korea, as well as bringing together peoples from the Asian region, especially from South East Asia," she said.

AirAsia X issued its statement today in conjunction with the airline's inaugural flight to the South Korean island of Jeju yesterday. Today, AirAsia X said Jeju is the airline's third destination in South Korea after Seoul and Busan.

Rafidah said: "This direct flight from Kuala Lumpur to Jeju has the potential of generating a capacity of over 156,000 a year between Kuala Lumpur and Jeju while saving our guests a great deal of hassle for domestic transit. Our guests will now have the convenience of the direct non-stop flight to experience Jeju's beautiful landscape and nature, culture and heritage as well as leisure activities."

At Bursa Malaysia today, AirAsia X shares settled at 33.5 sen at 12:30pm. The stock saw some four million shares traded.
