KUALA LUMPUR (Mar 10): AirAsia Bhd has introduced two direct flights from here (Kuala Lumpur), one each to Indonesia and India, to enhance its regional network.

In a statement today, low-cost carrier AirAsia (fundamental: 0.2; valuation: 0.6) said it would fly to Visakhapatnam in India, and Pontianak in Indonesia.

AirAsia said it would also reintroduce the Johor Bahru-Medan (Indonesia) route.

The Kuala Lumpur-Pontianak and Johor Bahru-Medan flights will start this March 27, with two weekly flights each. The Kuala Lumpur-Visakhapatnam flight will commence this May 7, with three-weekly flights.

AirAsia commercial head Spencer Lee said: “We are ecstatic to announce three new route launches for AirAsia Berhad for 2015, as we expand our reach into India and Indonesia, to provide greater connectivity for our guest in these promising markets.

"As a truly Asean airline, we are proud to announce the recommencement of Johor Bahru — Medan direct flights, which will provide enhanced connectivity for the communities in southern Peninsular Malaysia, as well as Medan."

AirAsia's additional routes come at a time when the company have seen weaker financials. Net profit fell to RM82.84 million in financial year ended Dec 31, 2014, from RM362.12 million a year earlier.

At 2:55pm, AirAsia shares fell two sen or 0.8% to RM2.36, for a market capitalisation of RM6.56 billion. Some 7.3 million shares were traded.
