KUALA LUMPUR: Budget airline AirAsia Group Bhd is converting 253 orders for the A320neo to the larger A321neo.

AirAsia said the change will enable it to offer a higher capacity in response to ongoing strong demand across its network. This also makes the airline the world’s largest customer for the A321neo, with an order of 353 aircraft.

“We have spent a number of years reviewing the future of our operations and today, we’re proud to become the world’s largest customer for the A321neo,” AirAsia Group executive chairman Datuk Kamarudin Meranun said in a statement yesterday.

“With its numerous efficiency benefits and an operational flexibility that this aircraft brings, the A321neo will be the new backbone of our operations as we continue to expand to meet growing air travel demand across Asia.”

AirAsia said it has placed orders for a total of 592 A320 Family aircraft. It currently has 230 A320 Family aircraft in service, from its hubs in Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines, India and Japan.
