KUALA LUMPUR (March 8): Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) chief operating officer (COO) Datuk Azmi Murad has retired, according to a filing last Wednesday.

The airport operator announced that Azmi, 69, retired from his position effective last Thursday (March 4). He was appointed as MAHB’s COO on Oct 1, 2020 and served for some five months.

In an internal memo sighted by theedgemarkets.com, MAHB said that it was saddened to see the departure of Azmi, who is more colloquially known as To’ Mie.

“On behalf of Malaysia Airports employees, we would like to this opportunity to express our heartiest gratitude to Datuk Azmi Murad for his invaluable contribution to the company, and we pray for his continued good health during his retirement,” the memo said.

Azmi started his career as an air traffic controller in 1970 with the Department of Civil Aviation, now known as the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM), and subsequently joined MAHB when it was incorporated in 1991.

Since then, his career with the MAHB group has been wide-ranging, including stints as airport managers at several domestic and international airports.

Prior to his most recent position as the COO of MAHB, he served as an executive director of the group’s wholly-owned subsidiary Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen International Airport Investment Development and Operation Inc.

Azmi was also MAHB’s general manager of corporate communications, and once chaired the Airports Council International World Facilitation and Services Standing Committee and served on the board of Tourism Malaysia, as well as the committees of the Kuala Lumpur Tourism Development Council (KLTDC) and the Malaysia-Singapore Business Council’s Joint Tourism and Hospitality.

Shares in MAHB were 1.83% or 11 sen higher at RM6.11 at the time of writing, valuing it at RM10.14 billion. It had seen 1.16 million shares done.
