KUALA LUMPUR (July 2): Around 62% of public service vehicle (PSV) licence applicants between April and June have obtained the licence ahead of the July 12 deadline, says Transport Minister Anthony Loke.

Speaking in the Dewan Rakyat today, Loke shared that 16,338 applicants sat for the PSV licence application theory test in the three months, and 10,151 passed the test.

"This number is expected to increase rapidly ahead of July 12, in line with the introduction of digital courses beginning June 3, 2019 at the approved training centres," he said.

Selangor has the highest number of registered applicants at 5,783 with 2,472 passes, followed by Kuala Lumpur with 4,580 applicants and 1,944 passes, and Johor with 4,453 applicants and 1,169 passes.

Loke was responding to a question by Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid [BN-Padang Terap] and refuting a news report in May that less than 50% of applicants passed the PSV licence test in the country.

Meanwhile, Loke said the government estimates each e-hailing driver to incur costs of under RM800 each to be eligible to provide the service.

The cost comprises RM20 PSV licence renewal fee, RM300-RM400 annual insurance charge for PSV vehicle, as well as RM200 for the course — the latter of which is waived when companies such as Grab opt for its drivers to go for digital course.

The government has instructed all e-hailing drivers to apply for PSV licence, which is also required by taxi drivers, before July 12 this year.
