KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 1.99 million foreign workers in Malaysia were registered under the Temporary Visiting Work Permit (Pas Lawatan Kerja Sementara) as at Aug 31 this year.

In a parliamentary written reply on Monday, the human resources ministry said based on Malaysia’s Immigration Department’s statistics, the manufacturing sector employed the highest number of foreign labour, totalling 706,502.

This is followed by these sectors — construction (429,552 people), plantation (268,203), agricultural (150,003) and domestic maids (130,450).

In line with the 11th Malaysia Plan, the ministry said the government is aiming to cap foreign labour employment below 15% of the country’s total workforce by 2020, and that various measures have been taken to reduce reliance on foreign workers.

The ministry was responding to Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir’s (Pakatan Harapan-Johor Baru) parliamentary question on the latest number of foreign workers and the ministry’s target on the number of foreign workers needed in Malaysia.
