KUALA LUMPUR (April 26): The Ministry of Health has detected 139 Covid-19 positive cases among the 12,672 Malaysians who have been tested for the deadly virus, after they have returned from overseas.

This represents an infection rate of 1.1% among those who came back home, after the movement control order was implemented.

Director-General of Health Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said a majority of individuals that tested positive are those who returned from Indonesia (99 cases), followed by the UK (14 cases), Singapore (13 cases), Turkey (five cases), Holland (three cases), the US (two cases), Thailand (one case), France (one case) and Bangladesh (one case).

The government has made it mandatory for Malaysians who returned from overseas to be quarantined for 14 days — a measure to contain imported cases.

“This shows that the targeted approach taken by the government is showing results. We hope that this would curb the spread of the virus among high-risk groups.

“The ministry is expecting to see more positive cases in the near term, as the targeted screening continues,” Noor Hisham said.

The MoH reported 38 new positive cases — the second time that the daily new infection figure to be below 40 in one week. The country’s tally is at 5,780.

There were 100 recoveries as of noon today. The total number of cured cases in Malaysia climbed to 3,862, compared with 1,820 — the number of active cases with high transmission risk.

No death was reported today. The deadly virus has killed 98 people in the country.
