KUALA LUMPUR: The notion of Malay supremacy still has credence among the majority of Malays in rural areas, where Umno and Barisan Nasional (BN) continue to nurture this idea while giving handouts, pollster and analyst Ibrahim Suffian said yesterday.

These are among reasons why the Malays still do not place their trust in the opposition, the director of Merdeka Center said.

“I think there are two perspectives to look at — the rhetoric speeches on Malay supremacy or Islam being threatened.

“That was successful in keeping the base support for Umno and BN loyal, otherwise they might have different ideas and change the way they voted,” Ibrahim said in a question-and-answer session at a conference on the 13th general election in 2013.— The Malaysian Insider
