KUALA LUMPUR: The government is unable to stop private development and can only advise the land owner to retain the Vivekananda Ashram building in Brickfields here, says Federal Territory Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor. He said this was because the 110-year-old Hindu heritage building is located on private land.

“How can we stop them if they want to build on the land? What we will suggest is that they engage with the public and Indian community on this matter,” said Tengku Adnan after launching the Sarapan Rakyat 1Malaysia event in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

However, he said Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) has yet to decide on the matter.

“Just like any heritage building in Kuala Lumpur, we will allow them [developers] to develop the area but will ask them to retain the heritage building. We cannot be taking over all the heritage buildings when there is redevelopment. The public will get angry,” said Tengku Adnan.Kuala Lumpur mayor Datuk Seri Ahmad Phesal Talib said DBKL is still scrutinising the application for the redevelopment of the heritage site. — The Malaysian Insider
