KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 14): The government is open to the idea of having more groups operating airports and funding airport expansion projects, said Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Kamarudin Jaffar.

Putrajaya recognises that local airports are bound to undergo expansions in the long run, he said, adding however that airlines may not be allowed to double as airport operators.

"I believe the policy is not to allow an airline to operate the terminals," he told a press conference. "But generally we recognise that KLIA (Kuala Lumpur International Airport) needs expansion, but exactly how the expansion is going to be done has not been determined yet," he said.

"There are also a few other airports in the country that are in the process of expansion," said Kamarudin. "We are basically open to proposals as to how our future terminals are to be paid for and operated."

Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd currently operates all but one of the country's 40 airports. The Senai International Airport in Johor Bahru is run by a unit of MMC Corp Bhd.
