KUALA LUMPUR (Dec 11): Umno's financial statement for the year ended Dec 31, 2014 showed a deficit, with the ruling party having received RM82 million in donations and contributions.

In an addendum to the financial statement, the donations were broken down as RM113,000 from the party's building fund, and RM81,960,000 as "contributions received" (sumbangan diterima) without further elaboration.

The Malaysian Insider sighted the financial statement which was tabled at the party's annual general assembly yesterday and distributed to delegates as part of the documents for the gathering.

A group of Umno branch chiefs who call themselves the Coalition of Branch Chiefs Malaysia (GKCM) have questioned the financial statement for failing to account for the RM2.6 billion "donation" to party president Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

The group recently filed a report with the Registrar of Societies (RoS) and want the authority to investigate the donation given to Najib, who has said he had the capacity as president to hold funds in trust for the party.

GKCM also said Umno's financial statements for 2013 and 2014 did not mention the RM2.6 billion from a Middle Eastern donor.

The RM2.6 billion was transferred in batches between 2013 and February this year, according to The Wall Street Journal which first broke the story on July 2 this year, citing documents from Malaysian investigators.

The largest portion of the funds – US$681 million – was transferred into Najib’s accounts in AmBank in Malaysia through a British Virgin Islands company and Falcon Private Bank in Singapore, in March 2013, two months before the 13th general election.

The rest was channelled between December 2014 and February this year through entities linked to Najib’s brainchild, 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB).

Najib has denied taking funds from 1MDB for personal gain.

He has had his statement taken by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), which has also gone to the Middle East and interviewed the donor.

Umno's accounts for 2014 also showed that the lead ruling Malay party registered an income of RM171.53 million last year, a 16% increase from RM147.15 million in 2013.

While the party's income increased by some RM24 million, it was not enough to cover its expenses.

Although party spending was lower in 2014, at RM203 million compared to RM284 million the previous year, it suffered a deficit of RM31 million last year.

Its biggest expenditure last year was operational costs at the Putra World Trade Centre, the party's headquarters, at RM50 million, higher by RM10 million from 2013.
