KUALA LUMPUR (March 24): Seventeen member banks of The Association of Banks in Malaysia with operations in Johor, which observe Saturday and Sunday as rest days, will now be closed on the following working day in the event that a public or state holiday falls on a Sunday.

"This will bring Johor in line with the prevailing practice in Kedah, Perlis, Penang, Perak, Pahang, Selangor, Malacca, WP Kuala Lumpur, WP Putrajaya, Sabah and Sarawak where banks also observe Saturday and Sunday as rest days.

"The Johor State Secretary Office has been duly informed of the additional day of bank closure," said the association in a statement today.

With the new practice in place, it said that commercial banks in Johor will be closed on May 2, Oct 3, Nov 7, and Dec 26 this year, due to the respective public holidays that fall on the preceding Sundays.

The 17 member banks operating in Johor are: Affin Bank Bhd, Alliance Bank Malaysia Bhd, AmBank (M) Bhd, Bangkok Bank Bhd, Bank of China (Malaysia) Bhd, CIMB Bank Bhd, Citibank Bhd, Hong Leong Bank Bhd, HSBC Bank Malaysia Bhd, Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (Malaysia) Bhd, Malayan Banking Bhd, OCBC Bank (Malaysia) Bhd, Public Bank Bhd, RHB Bank Bhd, Standard Chartered Bank Malaysia Bhd, The Bank of Nova Scotia Bhd and United Overseas Bank (Malaysia) Bhd.

"Bank customers are urged to use alternative channels such as online banking, automated teller machines (ATMs) and cash deposit machines (CDMs) to conduct their banking transactions during these times," said the association.
