KUALA LUMPUR (July 25): Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said the government wants those named in the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) civil lawsuits to clear their names, to show that there was no misuse of public funds.

He reiterated that the government is taking this issue seriously, adding it is prepared to extend full cooperation to investigating authorities, Bernama reported.

“Let’s not get carried away with the matter. Leave it to the judicial process for we believe that sooner or later, the truth will prevail,” he was quoted as saying at the Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin Mosque in Putrajaya, during the presentation of offer letters for the performance of the Haj, sponsored by 1Malaysia Development Bhd Foundation.

He said the consolidation of troubled 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) will continue, adding that he expects 1MDB to be stronger in the future.

To recap, the DOJ had filed civil lawsuits last week to seize over US$1 billion (RM4.08 billion) in assets that it said were the result of US$3.5 billion that was misappropriated from 1MDB.

U.S. attorney-general Loretta Lynch said the US$1 billion in assets were just a portion of the money stolen from 1MDB and laundered to American institutions, in violation of U.S. law.
