KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 3): The Malaysian police cannot make an arrest on telecommunications tycoon T Ananda Krishnan without a court order from here, according to a Bernama news report today.

Quoting Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar, the national news agency reported that the Malaysian police cannot detain Ananda and a senior Astro official in relation to a money laundering case in India, which reportedly involves a former telecommunications minister there.

"We cannot act on Indian arrest warrants issued against the duo as we do not have any agreement with India that we can execute their warrants of arrest.

"Given that this case is related to a civil suit, they (India) have to apply for permission from a court in this country before further action," Khalid was quoted as saying after attending Hari Raya open house at the Selangor police contingent headquarters.

This follows a report in Indian media that India's Central Bureau of Investigations has applied for warrants of arrest against Ananda and three others in a money laundering case there.
