KUALA LUMPUR (Dec 9): Existing Myanmar workers in Malaysia will not be affected by the Myanmar Government’s decision to temporarily stop sending new workers here, as there are no new policies on the current workforce.

Malaysia's International Trade & Industry Deputy Minister Datuk Ahmad Maslan said this in response to news reports, which indicated Myanmar had suspended its workforce to Malaysia, after Malaysia protested against the treatment of Rohingyas in Myanmar.

Ahmad Maslan said: “For as long as there is no new policy, existing foreign workers will be maintained in their current position.”

He was speaking to reporters at the Malaysia Steel Institute "HR Day" event here. Malaysia Steel Institute runs under the purview of the International Trade & Industry Ministry.

Ahmad said while Malaysia did not encourage the import of foreign workers, the country however acknowledges there are industries that require foreign labour, especially in dirty, dangerous and demanding work.

“If we do require foreign workers, we will ensure we can obtain them," he added.

Ahmad Maslan said should the government need an alternative plan, policy makers would look at workers from other countries like Bangladesh, Indonesia and the Philippines.
