KUALA LUMPUR (March 28): Dewan Rakyat today approved an RM4 billion supplementary Budget for 2016.

The government tabled the Supplementary Supply (2016) Bill 2017 for the third reading today, which saw the majority of the House approving the additional Budget. It comprises an allocation of RM3.08 billion for the Consolidated Fund Services and another RM987.76 million for Development Expenditures.

In justifying the extra Budget in the Dewan Rakyat, Second Finance Minister Datuk Johari Abdul Ghani reiterated that the largest item under the supplementary Budget is a RM2.25 billion 'Contribution to Statuary Fund' necessary to reduce the debt requirement for development expenditures (DE).

“The RM2.25 billion was an excess of fund from operating expenditure account being transferred to DE account. The government spent RM41.9 billion under the DE account in 2016 (and) the transfer of funds allows the government to borrow less for development,” he said.
