KUALA LUMPUR (Sept 29): The Cabinet is concerned over the country's drop in rankings from 18th to 25th in the Global Competitiveness Report, which was released by  the World Economic Forum.

In the latest global competitiveness report, Malaysia had dropped seven spots to 25th out of 138 countries, losing its top 20 rank. Malaysia was ranked 18th out of 140 countries last year.

Second Minister of International Trade and Industry Datuk Seri Ong Ka Chuan said today that there will be an interdepartmental meeting next Friday.

According to him, the interdepartmental discussion will be conducted due to the drop of rankings in the Global Competitiveness Report 2016-2017.

Departments which will be included in this discussions are the health and primary education, higher education, finance and others.

When asked about the impact of this drop in rankings on investments in Malaysia, Ong said, "There will definitely be negative impacts on the investments in Malaysia".

Ong also pointed out that he wishes to see improvement in next year's ranking, so as to be back in the top 20 placement. He specifically highlighted the health and primary education, as well as labour.
