KUALA LUMPUR (Sept 30): Malaysian tycoon Tan Sri Vincent Tan's companies Berjaya Corp Bhd and Magni-Tech Industries Bhd stole the spotlight among Bursa Malaysia's most-active and top-gaining stocks.

Berjaya Corp surged as much as 6% after the diversified group reported significantly higher first quarter net profit from a year earlier and declared a dividend.

According to Berjaya Corp's filing with the exchange yesterday, net profit for the first quarter ended July 31, 2015 (1QFY16) surged to RM56.13 million from RM8.28 million previously.

The group declared a dividend of one sen per share. The ex and payment dates fall on Dec 7 and Dec 30 respectively.

Today, shares of Berjaya Corp, the businesses of which include real estate, gaming, besides food and beverage, rose as much as two sen to 38 sen.

At 12.30pm, the stock pared gains at 37 sen with a trading volume of about 13 million shares.

Earlier, Berjaya Corp changed hands among Bursa Malaysia's most-active stocks.

Tan is the single, largest shareholder in Berjaya Corp with a 48.27% stake, according to the company's latest shareholding upate to the bourse. Berjaya Corp's website indicates that Tan founded Berjaya Corp in 1984.

Bursa Malaysia's updates show that via Berjaya Corp, Tan is also the largest shareholder in Magni-Tech with a 23.76% stake.

Today, Magni-Tech rose as much as 9% to become the second-largest gainer after the packaging materials manufacturer announced total dividends of 10 sen per share.

The dividends comprise a final dividend of three sen and special portion of seven sen.

The ex and payment dates for both dividends fall on Nov 5 and Nov 20 respectively.

At Bursa Malaysia today, Magni-Tech shares rose as much as 43 sen to RM5.17 at 12.30pm for a market capitalisation of RM560.95 million.

The stock saw 679,900 shares traded.
