SHAH ALAM (Sept 28): Proton Holdings Bhd has shortlisted five candidates as its potential strategic partner, said its chairman and DRB-Hicom Bhd managing director Datuk Seri Syed Faisal Albar.

Although he did not reveal any names, Syed said the company expects to make a final decision before the middle of 2017.

"We are at a stage where we are reviewing all [their] proposals and deciding which one would benefit us in the long run," he told the press after the launch of the new Proton Saga.

"Rest assured that we are in discussions with these companies and hope to come up with a decision before mid-2017," added Syed Faisal.

When asked on the size of the stake which parent company DRB-Hicom would dispose of once Proton forges a collaboration with its new partner, Syed Faisal declined to comment although he asserted that the group will remain a "substantial shareholder" of the carmaker.

"This is all still up in the air ... and it is highly premature for us to confirm anything at this moment, but DRB-Hicom will remain a substantial shareholder regardless," he said.
