KUALA LUMPUR (Apr 18): A travel and tours company, believed to be linked to Uber, is facing two charges of operating vehicles and ferrying passengers without licence, at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport 2 terminal.

Trupio Tour Sdn Bhd is said to have committed the offence on August 24 last year but was only charged last month.

The charge sheet stated that Trupio had on two counts, used vehicles belonging to a rent-a-car company to provide public service but at different gates of the airport terminal.

If found guilty, the company can be fined up to RM100, 000 and the vehicles could be forfeited by the government, under the Land Public Transport Act 2010.

The company has claimed trial and the prosecution yesterday during a case management, released documents to lawyer Hamidi Mohd Noh who is appearing for Trupio.

Deputy Public Prosecutor B. Uma Devi is prosecuting. Another case management is scheduled before a magistrate in Sepang on May 22.

Hamidi refused to comment on the case when approached by The Malaysian Insider.

"Wait for the trial," was all that he was prepared to divulge.

The Malaysian Insider, however, understands that an average of five cases is registered in the Sepang court every month, against those who violated provisions in the Land Public Transport Act.

"All those charged were caught at the KLIA and KLIA 2," a court staff said.

Uber is an American international company headquartered in San Francisco, California. It develops, markets and operates the mobile-app-based transportation network also called Uber. The Uber app allows consumers to submit a trip request, which is routed to crowd-sourced taxi drivers.

Uber is said to pose an unfair competition to other licenced taxi operators, as the company offered transport service through smartphone application.

Its transport service in the Klang Valley is made available via its website, Facebook and Twitter since last year.

Uber has been in operation in Malaysia since October last year, and recently launched the Uber X low-priced private transport service, to complement its premium Uber Black service.

In Malaysia, Uber is said to have partnered with fleet operators that usually consists of car rental companies, or operators that offer car for hire services.
