2 Cultural Experiences

Malaysian Citizenship

In this exhibit, entitled malaysian citizenship, Japanese artist Kentaro Hiroki encapsulates his year-long experience of getting to know Malaysia during his time in a residency programme supported by A+ Works of Art. Wanting to explore the country’s history and formative moments of the identity of its people, Hiroki made use of material obtained from sources ranging from Malaysia’s National Archives to basement-level flea markets. Don’t miss the last two days of the exhibition, open for viewing from noon to 7pm, and located at A+ Works of Art, d6-G-8, d6 Trade Centre, 801 Jalan Sentul Sejahtera, Kuala Lumpur. Visit www.facebook.com/AplusArt.asia to learn more.

The event’s organisers aim to alert the public to the importance of language learning to increase multilingualism and intercultural understanding, to promote the rich linguistic and cultural diversity of Europe and to encourage lifelong language learning in and out of school. The event takes place tomorrow from 10am to 2pm, with activities such as trial classes and quiz contests. Make sure to register by 3pm today and find more information about the day’s programme via www.alliancefrancaise.org.my.

1 Way to be inspired

Five Tigers @ FreedomFilmFest

FreedomFilmFest is Malaysia’s leading international human rights film festival. This Sunday, it is screening Five Tigers, a documentary of which the synopsis, on the event’s website, reads as follows: “Histories of women, especially those of working class women, is a much neglected aspect of Malaysian histories. This film documents the life journeys of Loh Siew Imm, Luo Mu Lan and Chen Shu Jin, who were actively involved in the activities of Labour Party of Malaya in Penang in the tumultuous 1960s. Together, they and another two party members were regarded as the ‘Five Tigers’ for their activism in the Sungai Pinang area. This film is not just an attempt to fill the missing pieces and perspectives, but also to reconnect the younger Malaysians to an earlier generation whose struggles and efforts to make Malaysia a better society and nation have largely been forgotten.” The film screening takes place on Sunday at 1.30pm, at PJ Live Arts, Jaya One, Petaling Jaya.
