(May 15): Re-elected Permatang Pauh MP Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail said she accepts the role of opposition leader, adding that she was humbled by the trust placed in her by Pakatan Rakyat.

"I am humbled to be named for the role although by convention, it is DAP that has the most number of seats in Parliament.

"So I am thankful and will accept the role," she said after attending the trial involving her jailed husband Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim against former tennis partner Datuk S. Nallakaruppan.

?Asked when she would officially attend Dewan Rakyat as the opposition leader, Dr Wan Azizah said that she would issue a statement soon.

She added that she will be sworn in as MP on May 18.

Dr Wan Azizah won the Permatang Pauh by-election on May 7, after the seat was vacated by Anwar when the Federal Court upheld his second sodomy conviction and five-year jail term.

Dr Wan Azizah, the PKR president, won the seat by 8,841 votes over Barisan Nasional's Suhaimi Sabudin.

With a smaller voter turnout this time, her share of votes coast was roughly at 57% compared with the 58.56% Anwar obtained when he contested and won the seat in the 2013 general election.

Dr Wan Azizah was first election as Permatang Pauh MP in 1999 in a by-election after Anwar was sacked from government and convicted of sodomy and corruption.
