KUALA LUMPUR (June 29): Permodalan Nasional Bhd (PNB) chairman Tan Sri Abdul Wahid Omar has resigned from his position today.

The Star, quoting sources close to the government-linked company (GLC), wrote that today will be the 54-year-old's last day as chairman at the state-owned fund manager.

Speculations of his resignation have been circulating in the past few weeks but Wahid was only expected to leave by early July.

Last week, The Edge Financial Daily reached out to PNB for clarification about Wahid's rumoured resignation at the time, but the official said then the company had no comment, and dismissed such talks at the time as "just speculations".

Observers believe that Wahid's departure from PNB may be due to his affiliation with the previous government and his stand in supporting the goods and services tax, which has been abolished by the new Pakatan Harapan government a few days after it came into power.

Prior to being chairman of PNB, Wahid was a senator at the Dewan Negara, and a minister in the Prime Minister's Department in charge of the Economic Planning Unit from June 2013 to June 2016.

Over the years, Wahid has held several high-ranking positions in GLCs, most notably of which were as managing director and chief executive officer (CEO) of United Engineers (M) Bhd and Telekom Malaysia Bhd, and president and CEO of Malayan Banking Bhd.

Besides Wahid, online news portal The Malaysian Insight reported earlier today that a series of high-profile chief executives, directors, chiefs and ambassadors will end their service by Saturday (June 30) as the new government moved to weed out political appointees from the previous government.

The report said Lembaga Tabung Haji group managing director and CEO Datuk Seri Johan Abdullah and Tenaga Nasional Bhd chairman Tan Sri Leo Moggie will be among those ending their term.

Several top bankers in GLC banks have also been asked to leave, the report added.
