Star Media Group Bhd chief operating officer Roy Tan has been tasked with reshaping the newspaper company that has been hard hit by the digital disruption of print media.

“I'm not one of those guys that is gloom and doom (about the print media industry). I think business is bright and I think journalism is well and alive,” Tan tells The Edge Weekly.

He is cautiously optimistic on Star Media's prospects given that the group is among the print media companies that are facing the twin threats of the advertising dollar migrating from traditional media and declining circulation.

Adding to Tan's challenges is the waning public confidence in mainstream media which was seen as the government's mouthpiece in the past.

The over-the-top (OTT), online video streaming service dimsum is considered as an investment made by the group to gain a foothold in digital media space. Like any digital start up, dimsum is currently burning cash to fuel its future earnings growth.

Will his formula for The Star to regain its shine in this new age work?
