(May 6): The Subang Jaya Municipal Council (MPSJ) has banned traders from using polystyrene containers to pack food during the Ramadan bazaar next month.

This was announced at a seminar which was organised by MPSJ this morning to educate traders on the operational guidelines for the Ramadan bazaars.

MPSJ Management Department director Mohd Zulkurnain Che Ali said that traders must abide by the new regulation.

"The reason we are disallowing the use of polystyrene is because it is harmful to the environment. We want to work towards making MPSJ a green municipality," he said.

Zulkurnain suggested that the traders use paper, recyclable plastic and biodegradable containers to pack the food items.

"The recyclable plastic containers might cost more, but it is better for the environment," he said.

More than 500 traders attended the seminar which was held at the Puchong Indah, Selangor multipurpose hall.

The month-long Ramadan bazaar will take place at 24 locations in Puchong, Subang Jaya, Kinrara, Serdang and Seri Kembangan.

MPSJ Licensing Department director Asfarizal Abdul Rashid said the seminar was held to remind traders on the rules and regulations that must be followed during the Ramadan bazaar.

"It is compulsory for the traders to attend the seminar and it's also one of the requirements before we give the traders the permit to operate," he said adding that almost 1,200 traders have been issued lots at the Ramadan bazaars.

Asfarizal also stressed that traders must maintain a hygienic and clean environment.

"We want to ensure that all traders have got their typhoid shots and follow high standards while handling food products. They must also wear an apron and a cap at all times," he said.

Asfarizal also said that traders must display their permits at all times and warned traders on leasing their lots out to others.

"Our enforcement officers will be visiting all the Ramadan bazaars. If we find that the traders have broken the rules then we will revoke their permits," he said.

There was also a talk by Unilever Food Solutions chef Ibrahim Lop on food costing and preparations.

Asfarizal said that MPSJ would be organising various activities to promote the Ramadan bazaars. – The Malaysian Insider
