KUALA LUMPUR (July 31): AirAsia Bhd group chief executive officer Tan Sri Tony Fernandes said Malaysia needs "new airports operators" to ensure a competitive aviation sector brings out the best in the country's tourism industry.

Citing examples, Fernandes said via Facebook and Instagram today that new airport operators were needed to support Sabah's tourism industry, after Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd closed the Kota Kinabalu International Airport's Terminal 2 in 2015.

Today, he called for a new low cost carrier terminal (LCCT) in Sabah to further grow the state's tourism sector. “It's amazing what AirAsia has done in Sabah. Tourism is booming. And everyone associated with Sabah tourism acknowledges that it’s AirAsia that has done this," Fernandes said.

"Need an LCCT in Sabah. New airport operators needed. Love competition. Brings out the best in humans. Believe in the free market not monopolies," he said.

AirAsia had operated from Kota Kinabalu International Airport's Terminal 2, prior to the terminal's closure in 2015.

AirAsia had subsequently moved its operations to the airport's Terminal 1.
