KUALA LUMPUR (Oct 7): AirAsia Bhd group chief executive officer Tan Sri Tony Fernandes has taken to Twitter to belt out a series of tweets on the importance of English proficiency among Malaysians.

Known for his feisty opinions, Fernandes claimed that Malaysia had lost its competitiveness due to the nation's falling standards in English.

"Malaysia has lost its competitiveness due to our standards in English going down. We can't run away from English. It's the global language. Our country has so much potential. It's time for the silent majority to speak up. I have tried in my small way. But I'm going to be louder.

"Imagine if all our kids were proficient in English like they were in the old days. Plus (we) could speak Bahasa, Mandarin and Tamil. Wow!" he said

Fernandes comments comes at a time when the Malaysian government via the Project Management Delivery Unit (Pemandu) was undertaking a survey on the importance of English proficiency.

Pemandu, a unit under the Prime Minister's Department, started the online survey to gauge the general perception on the importance of English proficiency with an emphasis on teaching subjects in English at schools.

"Would you consider some subjects in school to be taught in another language besides Bahasa Malaysia?" Pemandu asked.
