KUALA LUMPUR (July 21): Former youth and sports minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman is expected to be charged tomorrow over the alleged misappropriation of over RM1 million belonging to a political party.

He is expected to be charged at the Sessions Court here with criminal breach of trust (CBT) under Sections 403 and 405 of the Penal Code, a source told The Edge.

Syed Saddiq, who is the member of Parliament (MP) for Muar, is also expected to be charged under the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001 at the Sessions Court in Johor Bahru at a later date.

The amount involved is estimated to be RM1.12 million, the source said.

In a video tweet confirming the court case, Syed Saddiq said "it has been over a year" since he was threatened with court charges for not joining the ruling Perikatan National coalition.

He added that he will attend the court proceedings at 8.30am tomorrow, and has scheduled a press conference at 8pm.

Investigations against the lawmaker began in June 2020 after a police report was lodged over the loss of RM250,000 which he had kept.

He reported that the money belonged to him and his parents, and went missing from his Petaling Jaya home.

Syed Saddiq is currently serving as an independent MP while awaiting the approval for the registration of the Malaysian United Democratic Alliance, which he founded in September 2020 and is currently the president.

After a hiatus amid the Emergency Ordinance since January 2021, Parliament is scheduled to have a special sitting for five days from July 26 to debate measures to address the Covid-19 pandemic, followed by an actual sitting for the Dewan Rakyat which will take place from Sept 6.
