KUALA LUMPUR (Sept 6): Selangor led other states in Malaysia in terms of contribution to the national economy in 2016, with a 22.7% share.
 
The Department of Statistics today released data showing the federal territory of Labuan recorded the highest gross domestic product (GDP) growth in 2016 of 7.2% among all Malaysian states.
 
This was followed by Kuala Lumpur at a 5.9% GDP growth, and Johor which saw a 5.7% GDP growth.
 
While eight states outpaced the national growth of 4.2%, Pahang recorded the slowest GDP growth last year at 2%.
 
Meanwhile, six states accounted for 70.6% of the national economy, with Selangor topping the list. It was followed by Kuala Lumpur, Sarawak, Johor, Penang, and Sabah.
 
Seven states, namely Kuala Lumpur, Labuan, Kelantan, Perlis, Perak, Selangor, and Kedah, saw large contributions from the growing services sector, while both services and manufacturing made up the bulk of economic activity in Penang, Melaka, Negeri Sembilan and Terengganu.
 
The agricultural sector, which had declined in 2016, held a vital share in Kelantan, Pahang, Perlis and Sabah, the data showed.
 
Meanwhile, six states in Malaysia, namely Kuala Lumpur, Labuan, Penang, Selangor, Sarawak and Melaka, recorded a higher GDP per capita than the national average of RM38,887.
 
Kuala Lumpur, including Putra Jaya, recorded the highest GDP per capita last year of RM101,420, versus the lowest GDP per capita of RM12,812 recorded in Kelantan.
 
However, all states posted an increase in GDP per capita in 2016, compared with the previous year, the statistics department data showed.
