SHAH ALAM (July 20): Selangor Pakatan Harapan (PH) is ready for its second by-election in three months this year, following the death of Balakong State Assemblyman Ng Tien Chee in an accident at KM 11.7 of the Grand Saga Highway early this morning.
Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari said the PH leadership would submit a notice of the vacancy to the Election Commission soon.
“In politics, we have to be prepared, including for the possibility of things which are beyond our control,...although we have just lost a people’s representative (Sungai Kandis state assemblyman Mat Shuhaimi Shafiei) and that process (by-election) is not yet over, we have to face it again.
"...however, let Ng’s death be handled first before we officially declare the seat’s vacancy to EC,” he told reporters after attending a community programme at the Sungai Kandis State Assembly Hall here today.
In the incident at 12.30 am today, Ng died at the scene of accident due to serious injuries to the head after the Nissan x-Trail car he was driving rammed the back of a lorry.
In the 14th General Election on May 9, Ng from DAP retained the seat for the second term after defeating BN and PAS candidates with a majority of 35,538 votes.
Amirudin who is also a member of the PKR Central Leadership Council said he was confident that the DAP leadership would decide on a candidate to fill the seat.
“I am confident that DAP will make a decision on any issues, including the candidate, “ he said, adding that he conveyed his condolences to Ng’s family.
In a separate development, Amirudin confirmed that he would be contesting in the PKR elections next month.
However, he said he had not decided on which post he would contesting for.
“It will not be one of the top five posts, for now, I will focus on Gombak as the deputy branch head, and my priority is Selangor. I want to give the best service to the people of the state as the menteri besar,” he said.
