KUALA LUMPUR: If you visit The Edge Galerie in Mont’Kiara from now until Dec 19, you will find some very abstract, eccentric, unusual and interesting art pieces on display. Comprising mainly contemporary works by distinguished Malaysian  sculptors and installation artists, the assembled artworks consist of metal, wood, glass, fibreglass and other unconventional materials.

Some of the 60-odd sculptures in the exhibition called For the Imaginary Space: Selected Sculptures and Installations from the Pakhruddin & Fatimah Sulaiman Collection are accompanied by sketches showing the thought processes of the artists in conceptualising and executing the artworks. The exhibition includes stunning works such as Mad Anuar Ismail’s Storm Riders 7, Sharon Chin’s Killing Jars, Raja Shahriman’s Killing Tool No. 4, Umibaizurah Mahir’s Toys and Ramlan Abdullah’s Monument of Freedom.

Kuan Kee Peng, an avid art enthusiast and collector described the exhibition as “excellent”, while Deputy High Commissioner of Singapore Ariel Tan said it never ceases to amaze her how The Edge Galerie is able to transform its versatile and elegant space to fit the various exhibitions which she visits every few months.

The owners of these astounding pieces are leading art collectors Pakhruddin Sulaiman and his wife, Fatimah, who have been collecting sculptures for about 18 years. The exhibited pieces are only a third of their collection.

“We have about 150 pieces which are all made by Malaysians. We want to break the myth that sculptures are the ‘poor cousins’ to paintings.

“Many have been misguided about collecting these artworks. In short, we want sculptures to be regarded on par with paintings. If more, better, but not less,” Pakhruddin said.

For The Imaginary Space: Selected Sculptures and Installations from the Pakhruddin & Fatimah Sulaiman Collection is open till Dec 19. Opening hours are from 11am to 7pm, Tuesdays to Sundays. The Edge Galerie is closed on Mondays and public holidays. For details, log on to www.theedgegalerie.com
