KUALA LUMPUR (Jan 11): The ringgit rebounded this morning following an extended loss over the last couple of days, strengthening below the 4.00 level against the greenback, rising 0.43% to 3.9875.

For the past one week, the ringgit had been trading between 4.0195 and 3.9917 against the US dollar.

It strengthened to 3.9865 against the US dollar this morning.

Meanwhile, the ringgit also firmed against the Singapore dollar, up 0.23% to 2.9936.

UOB Malaysia Senior Economist Julia Goh commented recently in a note that economic conditions are stronger now than previously in 2008 and 2013.

She said one of a few reasons for the stronger ringgit now is that it is coming from a higher base of close to 4.00 against the US dollar (March 2008: 3.20; May 2013: 3.05), which is considered undervalued.

Compared with other currencies, the ringgit is trading at a one-year high of 0.61263 against the Chinese renminbi, 5.3929 against the sterling pound, and 3.5774 against the Japanese yen.
