(April 30): A restaurant owner in Shah Alam became the first person to claim trial over a charge of violating the Goods and Services Tax Act 2014.

The Star Online reported today Raja Bunesah Begum Kamaruddin, 38, was summoned to the Shah Alam Sessions Court to hear five charges against her establishment, Restoran Hameeds Corner, in Section 16, Shah Alam.

The charge against her was for issuing about 2,000 invoices from April 7 to 11, without bearing details as required by Section 22 of the GST Act

The GST came into force on April 1.

Deputy public prosecutor, Raja Rozela Raja Toran requested RM100,000 bail for all the charges, but her counsel, Cullin Andrew said his client had already paid RM15,000 as a bond to the Customs Department.

"There is no need for a bail because this is a summons case. If my client is not present in court, an arrest warrant can be issued," Andrew reportedly said.

The Star Online reported that Judge Ahmad Azhari Abdul Hamid set bail at RM15,000 with one surety, and fixed May 25 for next mention. – The Malaysian Insider
