(Aug 15): Federal prosecutors have named the CFO of Red Granite Pictures, Douglas Hansen, as an “independent” fiduciary to oversee the company, while both parties work towards settling a huge corruption case involving 1MDB.

According to Variety, the US government and Red Granite had agreed in July to appoint “Looper” producer Douglas Hansen as an independent operational fiduciary for at least 30 days to provide oversight of the company and help maximize the value of its assets.

About a month later, Hansen was excused from the job. Reached by phone, Hansen declined to discuss the move in detail, Variety reported.

In a filing over the weekend, federal prosecutors agreed to name Randall Hermann, who was Red Granite’s CFO since August 2012, to take over as the new “independent” fiduciary, Variety reported.

In a joint statement, Red Granite and prosecutors stated that Hermann will facilitate ongoing settlement talks and support Red Granite’s continuing operations. Red Granite has maintained that it did not knowingly receive stolen funds, Variety reported.

Red Granite had allegedly used funds stolen from 1MDB to finance the making of “The Wolf of Wall Street,” “Dumb and Dumber To” and “Daddy’s Home.”

Red Granite’s CEO, Riza Aziz, is the stepson of Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak. Federal prosecutors want to seize Red Granite’s profits from the films for the benefit of Malaysians.

In total, the Department of Justice alleged that US$4.5 billion was siphoned from 1MDB to buy a yacht, luxury real estate, jewellery and paintings.

Last week, the government filed a stay action on the civil forfeiture cases so that they would not jeopardize the cooperation of foreign law enforcement agencies in an ongoing criminal probe.
