KUALA LUMPUR: The home ministry said it has written to the Caribbean island state of Saint Kitts and Nevis to find out if Penang-born businessman Low Taek Jho (Jho Low) holds a passport of that country.

In a written reply in Parliament to Ng Wei Aik (DAP-Tanjong), the ministry said the National Registration Department (NRD) has opened an investigation file after receiving a complaint that Low had violated Malaysian law by possessing dual citizenship.

“However, the complaint submitted to the NRD did not include evidence to enable action to be taken against the subject by striping him of his citizenship in accordance with Article 24 of the Federal Constitution,” it said.

“As such the NRD has submitted an application to verify the subject’s citizenship status with the country concerned and will take further action according to the law and procedures once the relevant proof is obtained,” it added.

Ng had queried the ministry on the status of its investigation into the matter after he lodged a complaint on June 21 last year.

This follows the disclosure by the US Department of Justice (DoJ), in a lawsuit concerning 1Malaysia Development Bhd, that Low possesses passports from both Malaysia and St Kitts and Nevis.
